The ecosystems of Carrara have been shrinked by expanding urbanization, as a result, the city lacks of “breathing” spaces.
This project aims at recover the Marble Railway, that used to be an important longitudinal line in the city, and at giving more spaces to the Carrione river, the other “line” that joins Carrara old city centre to the sea.
The idea is to create a more ecofriendly environment, for this reason we take into consideration the Marble Railway as a whole, and the areas around the Carrione connected to the railway.
Our goal is to recover natural spaces for people to enjoy and to give a chance to the city to “breath” again.

The present situation consist of many abandoned and fatiscent buildings, car parkings and high level of impervious surfaces. The ex San Martino station is in a state of decay and where once were the trucks, there is forsaken green area, running wild.
We plan to recover the sign of Marble Railway using the old line as a pedestrian/cycling way. The sense of the “railway” will be given by the pavimentation and the green strips.
We will convey the idea of the Marble, using gabion walls, filled with marble waste, to reach the abandoned green area which is on higher level and that will become a park.
On the other hand, we want to provide more spaces to the Carrione. To do that we will cut the area of the parking to the river level, creating a space which can be flood and can change in time.

01. PRESENT CONDITIONS
The area is in the city of Carrara on the South West edge of the historic center.
It is located beyond the Carrione stream which represents an element of discrimination between the oldest urbanization cettre and the peripheral settlement.
As we can notice the area of san martino is not so intensively urbanized, the 3 parkings are, infact, filling huge voids in which once were the track of the marble railway.
Overall we can see that there is a lack of planning in this area.
The river walls are tall, and the green public lots are a disorganized pattern of cutted fragments placed in the residual, not builded, spaces.
